Qualcomm and Amazon make an AI data center chip deal
Qualcomm says the companies will build custom silicon for AWS AI infrastructure; Reuters says the agreement could cover up to 60B USD in products.
Qualcomm and Amazon have announced a multi-generational collaboration to build customized silicon for AWS AI data center infrastructure. Qualcomm says the work will cover AI inference chips and high-performance optical connectivity, while also deepening Qualcomm’s own use of AWS AI infrastructure and Amazon Bedrock for chip design workflows.
The commercial structure makes the deal bigger than a normal supplier announcement. Reuters reports that Qualcomm said Amazon could buy up to 60B USD of its AI data-center chips and related products under the long-term partnership. CNBC and Reuters also reported that Qualcomm issued Amazon warrants for 25 million shares at 161.26 USD per share, roughly 4B USD of stock at that strike price.
For Amazon, the deal adds another custom-silicon path as hyperscalers try to reduce dependence on Nvidia GPUs for inference-heavy workloads. For Qualcomm, it is a serious attempt to move beyond phones and edge devices into AI data centers, where inference cost, memory bandwidth and networking are becoming strategic constraints.
The useful signal for readers is that AI infrastructure is becoming more vertically negotiated: cloud demand, chip supply, equity incentives and long-term capacity planning are increasingly part of the same deal.
