Google makes AI optional for schools — but not inside Search

K–12 administrators can enable Search without Gemini, yet Search itself will still include AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Google is changing its education controls so Gemini products and Google Search are off by default for K–12 student accounts until administrators explicitly enable them.

Schools will be able to switch on Search without enabling standalone products such as Gemini or Gemini Notebook. But Google is not offering an AI-free version of Search. AI Overviews and AI Mode remain integrated into the search experience, with a new guided-learning approach intended to walk students through problems rather than provide quick answers.

The distinction emerged after criticism that schools rejecting AI would also lose Search. Google clarified that administrators can enable the services individually, while maintaining that Search and AI are now deeply integrated.

The controls are scheduled to roll out in early 2027. Google says schools asked for more control over student access after concerns about using AI to shortcut assignments. Guided Learning is already available in Classroom, and a Search pilot is planned for selected US schools.

The policy gives administrators a choice between separate Google products, but not between traditional Search and AI-assisted Search. For schools, that turns a familiar utility into a broader decision about automated summaries, guided answers, privacy and classroom policy.
