OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens with CodeAI partnership

OpenAI is launching ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated experience designed around learning, teen protections and parental controls. The company announced it alongside a partnership with CodeAI, aimed at helping students understand how AI works instead of only giving them access to the tool.

The partnership includes a joint advisory council with experts in child development, youth policy and learning science. OpenAI and CodeAI also plan AI literacy programs through Hour of AI, a Builders Challenge for high school students, support for CodeAI’s free AI Foundations course, and career sessions with OpenAI researchers and engineers.

The practical point is that OpenAI is trying to frame teen AI use as a supervised learning product, not just a chatbot with an age label. The company says students should learn to question AI outputs, catch mistakes, know when to stop trusting an answer, and use the technology with teachers and families still in the loop.

That matters because AI tools are already common among students, while formal AI literacy is still thin in many classrooms. If ChatGPT for Teens becomes a real distribution channel for schools and families, the details around defaults, parental controls and classroom guidance will shape how a large group of young users first learns to treat AI.
