AI agents can now steer a SETI telescope and search its data in real time

The Allen Telescope Array processes 2.4 terabits per second and has already detected a pulsar with AI while observations were running.

Breakthrough Listen and the SETI Institute are bringing AI agents into daily searches for extraterrestrial signals at the Allen Telescope Array in Northern California. Researchers can issue a natural-language request and have agents steer the antennas, calibrate the instrument, correct data errors and apply models to the incoming stream.

The system is built around Nvidia Holoscan and processes telescope data directly in GPU memory instead of first writing huge streams to disk. Nvidia says it can handle 2.4 terabits per second on RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs, with inference running on site next to the telescope.

A web-based orchestration layer called Nexus gives the agents a live view of instrument state, compute resources and signal-processing pipelines. That lets them monitor packet loss, inspect spectrograms and rewrite processing blocks while an observation is still underway. Nvidia says workflows that once took researchers weeks or years can be compressed into hours.

The pipeline has already produced the first real-time AI detection of a pulsar in the Crab Nebula. The team is now evaluating open models, including Nvidia Nemotron, for observatories where data must stay local — potentially even future instruments operating offline on the far side of the Moon.
