OpenAI brings proactive ChatGPT dots to iMessage and RCS
A limited US preview lets Pro users text their agent, send photos or voice notes, and receive updates outside the ChatGPT app.

OpenAI is extending its always-on ChatGPT dots agents into native phone messaging. A limited preview for Pro users in the United States lets people text a dot through iMessage or RCS, send photos and voice notes, and receive proactive updates without opening ChatGPT.
The dot keeps the same context and connected plugins across ChatGPT and texting. Users enable the feature from the dot’s profile, verify their phone number, and then communicate through a dedicated conversation. OpenAI says only the verified user can text the dot, and the dot can only text that user. Group chats and ordinary SMS are not supported.
OpenAI says enabling texting does not give the company or the dot access to other phone conversations. Messages are delivered through third-party provider Linq, so chats are not end-to-end encrypted between the user and the dot. Linq processes messages for delivery, while OpenAI stores them as part of the dot’s ChatGPT conversation.
The practical change is reach: a persistent agent can now report progress, ask questions or flag monitored changes in a channel people already check. Availability is limited, and the option may not appear immediately even for eligible accounts.
