OpenAI connects Epic health records to ChatGPT for Healthcare

OpenAI is adding electronic health record context and official public healthcare datasets to ChatGPT for Healthcare, moving the product closer to the systems clinicians and administrators already use.

The new EHR integration lets healthcare organizations connect Epic environments so authorized patient information can be reviewed inside ChatGPT. OpenAI says clinicians can ask what changed since a patient’s last visit, which lab results need attention, whether medications changed, and what follow-ups remain unresolved. In supported deployments, ChatGPT can also appear directly inside an EHR workflow.

OpenAI is also launching a Healthcare Public Data plugin with structured access to official sources such as PubMed, DailyMed, RxNorm, ClinicalTrials.gov and CMS Coverage. The point is precision: teams can work with specific records, identifiers and versions instead of searching each database separately.

The company says physician reviewers rated 99.1% of responses safe across tested EHR use cases and more than 93% of responses as having good or better accuracy across five connected public data sources. The rollout is aimed at healthcare organizations using ChatGPT for Healthcare and eligible enterprise customers, while individual U.S. clinicians can access the public data plugin but not the EHR integration.
