OpenAI adds Apple Messages control to ChatGPT on Mac

OpenAI has added an Apple Messages plugin to the ChatGPT desktop app on Apple silicon Macs, giving ChatGPT a direct path into one of the most personal parts of a user’s computer.

According to OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes, the plugin can read and search iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations stored on the Mac. It can also prepare or send messages through Apple’s Messages app. Coverage from TechCrunch and MacRumors describes it as an integration for catching up on conversations, finding information in chats, drafting replies and sending texts.

The product signal is straightforward: ChatGPT is moving further from a chatbot into a local personal agent that can operate across everyday apps. Messages is a bigger step than reading a document or summarizing a web page, because it touches private conversations and can create outbound communication.

That makes the feature useful and risky in the same breath. For users, it could reduce friction around follow-ups, scheduling and searching old chats.
