Anthropic confirms an in-house chip team for Claude

Anthropic has confirmed that it is building an in-house silicon team to design custom chips for Claude. Business Insider reports that a company spokesperson described the effort as a way to co-design hardware and models so Claude can run faster and more efficiently at customer scale.

The move does not mean Anthropic is abandoning existing suppliers. The company says it will keep a multi-chip approach, with AWS, Google, Nvidia and AMD hardware still central to its scaling plans. Reuters and Business Insider both frame the effort as part of a broader response to tight supply and high demand for AI accelerator capacity.

A job listing for Anthropic’s custom silicon team points to hands-on chip design and verification work, with the company looking for engineers who have shipped semiconductor designs. That suggests the project is not just a procurement strategy, but an attempt to shape parts of the hardware stack around Claude’s workloads.

The broader signal is that frontier AI labs increasingly see hardware as part of the product, not just infrastructure. OpenAI, Meta and others are also pushing custom silicon efforts as they try to reduce dependence on scarce Nvidia capacity and squeeze more performance from each watt and dollar of compute.
