OpenAI is buying Pierre Computer to bring code storage into Codex

The startup’s Git infrastructure is already used by Codex, giving OpenAI more control over where agent-written software is stored and shipped.

OpenAI plans to acquire Pierre Computer, a developer-tools startup whose technology is already embedded in Codex, according to an exclusive report from Axios confirmed by OpenAI. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the companies have not said when the transaction will close.

Pierre builds Code Storage, a distributed system based on Git and designed for software created and changed by machines. Its product supports native clone, push and fetch operations, SDKs for TypeScript, Python and Go, webhooks, and synchronization with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket. Pierre says the service is built for large repositories and many concurrent writes from coding agents.

OpenAI says it will integrate Code Storage into Codex. Pierre’s open-source projects — Diffs, Trees and DiffsHub — are expected to remain open source after the deal.

Why it matters #

The acquisition would extend OpenAI beyond generating code into the infrastructure that stores, reviews and ships it. As coding agents create more branches, commits and parallel work, repository performance becomes part of the product rather than background plumbing.

That puts Codex in more direct competition with Microsoft-owned GitHub, even though Microsoft remains a major OpenAI partner. The move also follows OpenAI’s work on Pando, its internal Git backend for handling the higher volume created by agents. Together, the systems point to a broader Codex platform that owns more of the software-development workflow.
