OpenAI brings ChatGPT Work and Codex plugins to classrooms

OpenAI is adding three education plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex, aimed at college students, K-12 educators and college educators. The company describes a plugin as a package of apps, role-specific skills, instructions and common workflows, so users can start from a structured setup instead of writing complex prompts from scratch.

The student plugin is meant to turn course materials into guided tutoring, study guides, quizzes, flashcards and visual explanations. The teacher and college educator plugins focus on classroom planning, differentiated materials, syllabus updates, multimedia assessments and work across approved school tools. OpenAI says the plugins are available through ChatGPT Edu and district ChatGPT for Teachers deployments, where institutions can control permissions and connected apps.

The story matters because OpenAI is pushing education use away from simple answer generation and toward managed agent workflows. For schools, the pitch is not just better prompts, but a controlled workspace where AI can use local context while teachers and administrators keep oversight.
