Anthropic commits up to 7% of its shares to a public benefit fund
The fund starts with 5% of the company and can gain another 2% as Anthropic’s valuation rises.

Anthropic is committing 5% of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to shareholder approval. The company says the stake can rise by another 2 percentage points when its valuation passes specified milestones, potentially giving the fund 7% of Anthropic.
The fund will be a wholly owned LLC rather than a conventional nonprofit. Anthropic says that structure gives it flexibility to make large charitable grants, fund public-interest work, or distribute money directly to groups affected by AI. Its equity will not be used for lobbying or political donations.
The company did not disclose the valuation thresholds or the fund’s detailed governance. It said those details will follow in the coming months. Anthropic framed the structure as a way to make its public-benefit commitment scale automatically if the company grows.
Why it matters: the pledge links a meaningful slice of one of the world’s leading AI companies to the social and economic consequences of its technology. The eventual value, independence, and oversight of the fund will depend on Anthropic’s valuation and the governance rules still to be announced.
