Qualcomm buys Modular to make AI run across more chips

Qualcomm says it has completed its acquisition of Modular, adding an AI software platform meant to help developers optimize and deploy generative and agentic workloads across many kinds of compute.

The strategic point is bigger than one developer tool. Qualcomm is trying to expand beyond phone chips into a broader AI platform that spans devices, edge infrastructure, data centers, personal AI and industrial AI. Modular gives it a software layer around portability and performance, including support across CPUs, GPUs, NPUs and custom silicon.

Qualcomm says Mojo, MAX and Modular Cloud will continue as products and brands, with more investment and support through Qualcomm Technologies. Modular co-founder and CEO Chris Lattner will become executive vice president of Advanced AI Software and Platforms.

For AI builders, the practical promise is less dependence on a single hardware stack. If Qualcomm can keep Modular’s open ecosystem credible while adding distribution and chip expertise, developers and enterprises could get more ways to run inference efficiently outside the default GPU-heavy path. The hard part will be proving that the combined platform can win real adoption across both cloud and edge deployments.
