OpenAI cuts GPT-5.6 Sol API prices for three months

OpenAI is cutting developer prices for GPT-5.6 Sol, its frontier API model, by more than 20% for at least the next three months, according to Reuters and OpenAI’s pricing page. The change applies to API usage and eligible credits for ChatGPT Work and Codex; ChatGPT Pro, Plus and Business subscriptions are unchanged.

The new standard short-context price is 4 USD per 1M input tokens and 20 USD per 1M output tokens. Reuters says the previous prices were 5 USD and 30 USD, respectively. OpenAI’s pricing table also lists long-context GPT-5.6 Sol at 8 USD per 1M input tokens and 30 USD per 1M output tokens, with cheaper batch and flex tiers available.

The practical point is that OpenAI is making its top developer model cheaper at the moment when Anthropic and Chinese model providers are competing aggressively on both capability and price. A lower frontier price can shift routing decisions for coding agents, enterprise assistants and high-volume API products that were previously forced toward smaller models for cost reasons.

For builders, this is less about a temporary discount and more about a signal: frontier-model pricing is still moving down, and model choice is becoming a product and margin decision rather than a simple capability ladder.
