Google opens Gemini and Search to third-party apps through MCP

The Connected Apps Platform lets developers build one integration for both products, with more than 50 partner apps already available or planned.

Google has launched the Connected Apps Platform, a system for developers to build and manage third-party apps that work across both Gemini and Google Search. The company positions it as a single distribution layer for services that AI agents can call on a user’s behalf.

Developers connect through a cloud-hosted Model Context Protocol server or Android’s AppFunctions APIs. They then use the Google Connected Console to register, test and submit the app. Building one integration can make the service available in Gemini and, as Google expands the rollout, Search.

Google says more than 50 connected apps are involved. Adobe, Experian, Localiza and Peloton are already available in Gemini and are expected to reach Search, while Calm has joined as a new partner. The developer preview is being introduced in phases, with a United States waitlist at launch.

The platform gives Google an app ecosystem for AI agents similar in purpose to Apps in ChatGPT. It also strengthens MCP as common infrastructure: developers can expose actions once instead of writing separate integrations for every assistant. For users, that could let Gemini or Search move from recommending a service to completing a task inside it, subject to the permissions each app requests.
