OpenAI says ChatGPT work use is already crossing job boundaries

OpenAI has published the first report in its Work at the Frontier series, using ChatGPT activity to study how AI changes the actual content of work rather than only asking which jobs might be automated.

The company says its researchers analyzed more than 800,000 messages from U.S. ChatGPT users. The headline finding is that 16.8% of work-related messages, and 43.5% of occupation-specific messages, involve tasks associated with another occupation. OpenAI calls this pattern task crossover.

That matters because it points to a quieter change than job replacement. A salesperson can explore data, a marketer can troubleshoot a website, and a small-business owner can draft legal or financial material before bringing in a specialist. The work is not disappearing; the first pass is moving closer to the person who has the problem.

The report also says crossover is more visible in customer experience, design, HR, legal and marketing roles. Labor-market change may show up first in task mixes and handoff patterns, before it appears in formal job titles.
