OpenAI is eyeing Trail of Bits as it pushes into cybersecurity
The reported talks point to a broader move from AI labs: turning model-driven security research into products and services.

OpenAI is in early talks to acquire Trail of Bits, according to The Information. Trail of Bits is a software-security firm known for finding and fixing vulnerabilities in open-source software, with additional work across cryptography and blockchain security.
The deal is not announced, and Reuters reported that OpenAI and Trail of Bits did not immediately comment on the acquisition report. That keeps the story in report territory, but the direction is still important: OpenAI has been moving beyond model access into practical security workflows where AI systems find, validate and help repair software flaws.
Investor’s Business Daily tied the report to a drop in cybersecurity stocks, arguing that investors are watching whether OpenAI and other frontier labs will become direct competitors to established security vendors. The concern is less about one small acquisition and more about AI labs packaging model capability, proprietary research and specialist human review into cybersecurity products.
For builders and security teams, the takeaway is that AI-assisted vulnerability discovery is becoming a product category, not just a research demo. If OpenAI brings more security expertise in-house, the next phase may focus on end-to-end remediation: detecting issues, filtering false positives, proposing patches and coordinating fixes with maintainers or enterprise teams.
