Nvidia weighs buying Reflection AI to strengthen open-weight models

Financial Times reports early talks around an acquisition, deeper investment, or acqui-hire of the startup behind Beam.

Financial Times reports that Nvidia is in early talks to acquire Reflection AI or increase its investment in the startup. Reuters relayed the report and said it could not immediately verify it; Nvidia and Reflection did not immediately comment.

The talks are described as preliminary, and the structure could change. FT says one option is an acqui-hire style deal in which Nvidia hires staff and licenses technology instead of buying the company outright. That would still be a significant move because Nvidia is already a major backer of Reflection.

The strategic logic is clear. Reflection recently introduced Beam, a sparse mixture-of-experts open-weight model with 501 billion total parameters and 23 billion active parameters. The company pitches it for coding, reasoning and agentic workloads, with weights and developer artifacts planned after final safety work.

For AI builders, the story is not only ownership. If Nvidia pulls Reflection closer, it would tighten the link between GPU supply, model development and open-weight deployment. That could give Nvidia another lever in the race to shape enterprise AI stacks beyond selling accelerators.
