Marvell nears takeover of AI optics maker Lumentum
The companies are in advanced talks over a deal involving a data-center supplier valued near 83 billion dollars, but no final agreement has been reached.

Marvell Technology is in advanced talks to acquire Lumentum, a major maker of optical components used in data centers, Reuters reports, confirming earlier Bloomberg coverage. A transaction could be announced soon, but no final agreement has been reached and the terms could still change.
Lumentum was valued near 83 billion dollars after news of the talks, compared with roughly 221 billion dollars for Marvell. That scale would make the purchase one of the largest technology deals and a major consolidation move in AI infrastructure.
The logic is about moving data, not training models directly. AI clusters connect huge numbers of accelerators, and optical links are increasingly important for transferring information quickly between servers, racks and facilities. Lumentum supplies laser and optical networking technology, while Marvell sells data-center networking chips, custom silicon and connectivity products.
Combining those businesses could give Marvell a broader stack for AI data centers as spending shifts from individual GPUs toward the networking and optical systems around them. The caveat is substantial: the reporting describes advanced negotiations, not a signed or completed acquisition, and neither company has announced definitive terms.
