Character.AI files for bankruptcy after losing leaders to Google and Disney
The AI companion app is seeking a buyer while Disney takes a 20 million dollar non-exclusive license to some assets.

Character.AI, one of the best-known AI companion apps, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is trying to sell the business through a court-supervised process. The company says it will keep operating during the process, but warned that the platform could be wound down if no buyer or actionable proposal appears.
The filing comes after a difficult stretch for the startup. Google previously licensed Character.AI technology and brought back co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, shifting the company away from training its own foundation models. Disney has now agreed to pay 20 million dollars for a non-exclusive perpetual license to some assets, with former Character.AI employees who joined Disney helping provide transition services.
The consumer signal is bigger than one startup. Character.AI had huge engagement and cultural reach, but companion apps are expensive to run, hard to monetize and exposed to child-safety, legal and regulatory pressure. The case is a reminder that consumer AI products can look wildly popular while still struggling to become sustainable businesses.
