Aschenbrenner’s AI fund unwinds trades after steep losses

A large fund built around the AI boom is cutting positions, showing how fragile the market trade can become when leveraged bets reverse.

CNBC reports that Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, is unwinding many of its trades after sharp losses. The fund had become one of the most visible financial expressions of the AI boom, with large bets tied to chips, memory, cloud infrastructure and software disruption.

According to the report, losses came from two sides: long positions in AI infrastructure companies moved down, while short positions against software companies moved against the fund. Several prime brokers have been involved as the firm works to meet margin requirements or reduce positions in an orderly way.

The Financial Times separately reported that the fund has been seeking fresh capital after a pullback in AI-linked stocks. Aschenbrenner has publicly argued that advanced AI will reshape the economy, and his fund turned that thesis into concentrated market exposure.

Why it matters: this is not a model launch or a product update, but it is a useful market signal. AI infrastructure remains one of the strongest investment stories in tech, yet the unwind shows how quickly the trade can become fragile when leverage, crowded positions and a sudden sentiment shift collide.
