Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI and Google face lawsuit over AI slowdown calls

Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI and Google are facing a federal antitrust lawsuit over recent calls to slow or “pace” frontier AI development. The complaint, filed in the Northern District of California, argues that public support for coordinated pacing amounted to an illegal agreement among competitors.

Politico reports that the suit points to Dario Amodei’s essay calling for “industry-wide coordination” to pace the frontier, and to later supportive comments from Elon Musk, Sam Altman and Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis. The plaintiffs say any decision by leading labs to slow development should happen through public lawmaking, not private coordination by dominant AI companies.

That framing turns the AI safety debate into an antitrust fight. Supporters of pacing argue that frontier systems need stronger safeguards before capabilities accelerate further. The lawsuit argues that, if rivals coordinate on that slowdown, consumers and other market participants could be harmed.

The complaint is only an allegation, not a court finding. Politico said OpenAI, Anthropic, SpaceXAI and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
