OpenAI talks point to a 1.2T USD private valuation
Reports from FT, Bloomberg and Reuters say the company has discussed another raise before an eventual IPO, but no deal is finalized.
OpenAI has held early conversations with large investors about raising another private funding round at a valuation around or above 1.2T USD, according to reports from the Financial Times, Bloomberg and Reuters. The discussions are described as preliminary, so the practical reading is not that a financing is closed, but that investors are again testing how high the private market will price the company before an IPO.
The number matters because it would put OpenAI in the same valuation conversation as the world’s largest public technology companies while it is still private. It also shows how much capital the AI race now requires: model training, inference capacity, chips, data centers and product distribution are all becoming balance-sheet questions, not just product questions.
Reuters, citing FT, says the talks come before a planned public listing. Bloomberg similarly reports that OpenAI is weighing a fresh round at more than 1.2T USD. For users and builders, the takeaway is that OpenAI’s roadmap is increasingly tied to financing scale. More capital can support faster infrastructure buildout, but it also raises pressure for revenue, enterprise adoption and a cleaner path to the public markets.
