OpenAI brings ChatGPT to the US military’s GenAI.mil platform

OpenAI is bringing ChatGPT to GenAI.mil, the US Department of War’s secure enterprise AI platform used by civilian and military personnel. OpenAI says the deployment is a custom ChatGPT product approved for the department’s unclassified work and hosted inside authorized government cloud infrastructure.

The company frames the move as part of OpenAI for Government and a broader national-security push. ChatGPT on GenAI.mil is meant to support ordinary operational work: summarizing policy documents, drafting and reviewing procurement materials, generating internal reports, building compliance checklists, and helping with research, planning and administrative workflows.

OpenAI says the deployment includes model and platform-level safeguards and that data processed on GenAI.mil remains isolated in the government environment. The company also says the data is not used to train or improve OpenAI’s public or commercial models.

The significance is not just another enterprise rollout. Frontier AI tools are moving deeper into government and defense workflows, where the questions are less about novelty and more about security, data boundaries, oversight and who gets access to high-capability AI systems at institutional scale.
