Mistral will power Mozilla’s AI browsing assistant in Firefox

Mistral and Mozilla are partnering to put Mistral models inside Firefox Smart Window, Mozilla’s beta AI browsing assistant.

Smart Window is designed to help people make sense of complex searches, recover information from pages they clicked away from and source answers from their open browser tabs. Mistral says it will power the assistant for users in France and North America first, with the United Kingdom and Germany expected to follow.

The pitch is less about another chatbot and more about where AI sits in the browser. Mozilla frames the partnership as a way to keep AI browsing from becoming a single-vendor funnel, while Mistral gets consumer distribution for models it usually sells into enterprise and sovereign AI projects.

Privacy is the main differentiator Mozilla and Mistral are stressing. According to the announcement, Smart Window conversations are not saved on Mozilla’s servers by default, and partners such as Mistral agree to zero data retention.

The companies also say Mistral models are being tuned for regional languages, dialects and cultural context, so the assistant should feel less like an exported English-first product. For Firefox users, the practical change is a browser-native AI assistant that can work with browsing context while trying to preserve more user control than closed assistant ecosystems.
