Anthropic launches Claude Opus 5 as a cheaper everyday frontier model

Opus 5 closes much of the gap to Fable 5 on coding and knowledge work while staying at Opus 4.8 pricing.

Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5 on July 24 and positioned it as the new daily workhorse near the frontier. The company says Opus 5 is close to Claude Fable 5 on coding and knowledge-work evaluations while keeping the same base pricing as Opus 4.8.

What changed #

Opus 5 is now available on Claude, Claude Code and the Claude API. Anthropic says the model is stronger at agentic coding, long-horizon debugging, research workflows and visual artifact generation. It also becomes the strongest model on Claude Pro and the default on Claude Max.

The launch is carefully framed around safety boundaries. Anthropic says Opus 5 improves at finding vulnerabilities, but remains behind Mythos 5 on turning those vulnerabilities into working exploits. Some cyber requests can fall back to Opus 4.8, and enterprises in Anthropic’s Cyber Verification Program can access a less restricted configuration for legitimate security work.

Why it matters #

The model race is no longer only about the absolute top score. Anthropic is trying to make near-frontier intelligence cheaper and easier to use every day. If Opus 5 really delivers Fable-like coding behavior at Opus pricing, it changes the buying decision for developers and companies that cannot afford to run only the most expensive model.
