Anthropic’s Claude shared chats can surface in search

Reports from WIRED and 404 Media found public Claude shared chats and artifacts appearing in search results, including examples with sensitive personal or work material.

The issue is less a classic breach than a sharp privacy failure around expectations. Claude chats are private by default, but a shared link creates a public page. If that link is posted somewhere search engines can discover it, it may become easier for other people to find than the user expected.

Anthropic’s help center says users can open the Share menu and change a shared chat from public to private to disable the link. That is the practical step for anyone who has shared conversations, artifacts, documents or generated apps from Claude.

The bigger lesson applies beyond Anthropic: AI chats often contain far more personal context than normal web posts. Share buttons need clearer warnings, and users should treat any public AI link as a published webpage.
