SoftBank completes 30B USD OpenAI investment
The final 10B USD tranche brings SoftBank's cumulative OpenAI investment to 64.6B USD and roughly 13% ownership.
SoftBank has completed its planned 30B USD follow-on investment in OpenAI, turning one of the largest AI financing commitments into paid-in capital.
The Japanese group says the final tranche was 10B USD through SoftBank Vision Fund 2. After the transaction, SoftBank’s cumulative investment in OpenAI totals 64.6B USD, with an ownership interest of about 13%.
The financing structure matters almost as much as the headline number. SoftBank says the final tranche was funded with proceeds from a foreign-currency senior note issuance. The company also canceled the remaining 10B USD of unused capacity under a 40B USD bridge facility, after earlier repayments cleared the rest of that borrowing.
For OpenAI, the completion strengthens the capital base behind its compute buildout, model development and commercial expansion. For the market, it shows how aggressively large investors are financing the AI race: not just through venture rounds, but through balance-sheet-scale debt and concentrated strategic stakes.
The Information separately reported that Nvidia and SoftBank each made the final 10B USD investment tied to their 30B USD pledges in OpenAI’s round, underscoring how chip supply, cloud capacity and AI lab financing are becoming increasingly linked.
